As Men’s Mental Health Month draws to a close, let’s remember that this conversation doesn’t end on 30 June. South Africa is facing a men’s mental health crisis. Men are four times more likely to take their own lives than women, yet many continue to suffer in silence rather than reach out for help. (SA Federation for Mental Health) Research also points to the wider impact of poor men’s mental health. When emotional pain goes unaddressed, it can contribute to depression, anxiety, substance abuse and broken relationships, and has also been linked to higher rates of gender-based violence (GBV)(HSRC South African National GBV Study, 2024) Damaging ideas about masculinity also contribute to the problem, such as the belief that “big boys don’t cry” - that men must always be strong, keep it together, suppress their emotions and suffer in silence. This doesn’t just harm men; it impacts their families, communities and ultimately our nation. No man is meant to walk through life alone. Build a Band of Brothers. Find men who will know you, encourage you and stand with you. And be that brother to them. That’s not weakness. That’s strength.
