One thing that keeps bothering me is the difference between what was said immediately after the incident and what was presented during trial. In an interview given shortly after Austin Metcalf’s death, Hunter Metcalf stated that both he and Austin were saying things to Karmelo and that Austin grabbed Karmelo’s bag. Yet during trial, witness after witness was asked about Hunter’s involvement, and the answer was consistently that Hunter wasn’t involved. At the same time, multiple student witnesses testified that Austin approached Karmelo, grabbed him, and shoved him hard enough to move him backward before the incident occurred. What stands out to me is that very little attention seemed to be given to the claim that Austin may have also grabbed Karmelo’s property.
