I find it sorta bitter that in the end, yuusaku was not much more than the final push before ogata ended his story, a stepping stone in death aswell. Looking even broader at the plot itself, he's never spoken of or shown as "his own character" in a sense. No internal monolog, no in depth backstory, his face hidden from everyone's perspective, including the reader's. Ogata was the only on to reveal his face. Even then, it was only to move someone else's story forward, a plot device in life, death, and ink.

He has a lot of potential as his own character rather than a plot device for Ogata's story. When writing about him, I like to think that he has a tendency to act like a Martyr, Despite Ogata's noticeable red flags, Yuusaku still didn't leave and even seemed to still have faith that Ogata wasn't like that. That's clear self-destructive behavior; he never prioritizes himself, he always thinks about what the empire and others need, not what he needs.
