@nature: A whale graveyard millions of years old and over a thousand kilometers long has just been discovered. Not only could it tell us more about the evolution of a mysterious deep-sea denizen, but it’s a prime site for discovering brand new species, too. - Produced by Shamini Bundell & @Maren Hunsberger - Presented by Shamini Bundell - Research footage from Xiaotong Peng and team - Seafloor bathymetry visualizations copyright Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) 2026 - Stock footage: Getty Images / Moorea Ocean Adventures / barnburna - Stock music: Triple Scoop / Cinema Life / Ryan Matthews From Peng, X., et al. not to sound like a smart arse, but between the billions of years we have had oceans, that hole being one of the deepest in the ocean, currents & the physics based rule that wherever a lowest point resides, things will inevitably father there - I am not quite sure how it's considered a mystery

Could it be linked to a migration? If a route were above it might explain why there are so many?

How do fossils form on the sea floor? It was my understanding they formed when bones were buried and the organic compounds were replaced by minerals. How does this happen if they're just sitting on the sea floor?
