A system where a black hole replaces a star is scientifically plausible, and planets orbiting within it are informally called "blaneets" (a mashup of black hole and planet). Contrary to popular myths, a black hole does not inevitably suck in everything around it; if it has the same mass as our Sun, planets will orbit it along the exact same stable paths as they do in the Solar System. The primary difference is the complete absence of familiar starlight and warmth. Such planets can originate in three ways: surviving the supernova explosion that created the black hole, forming anew from its surrounding dust and gas disk, or being gravitationally captured from deep space. Instead of a sun, the energy source for this system would be an accretion disk — a ring of matter swirling around the black hole that gets heated to millions of degrees by friction, causing it to glow intensely. Theoretically, life on a blaneet is possible, but only around supermassive black holes and under extremely hostile conditions. Instead of a sun, the local biosphere would be illuminated by a giant, radiant ring, and the planet would need an incredibly dense atmosphere to shield against deadly X-ray radiation. Furthermore, due to the colossal gravity, time on the surface of such a world would tick much slower than in the rest of the universe. #blackhole #scary #Science #spacetok
