as a person in recovery, I'm exhausted by the amount of people who think you can shame someone out of having an eating disorder. "they have a responsibility if they have a platform!" like I can't stress enough how little you care about yourself or can think clearly when you're in the throws of mental illness. seeing people clearly struggling just makes me deeply sad.

This is not even about concern it’s about getting engagement on social media - I’ve watched about 100 of these videos and many, not all, use the same language/wording - it’s notable that Karen Carpenter is being brought up in at least 1/5-1/4th of them - people are seeing successful videos and then replicating the same content with the tour hashtags to ride the algorithm

Yep, when it comes to the Ariana Grande discourse at this point, I’m honestly confused on what they want to happen. Is she supposed to just go inside and not be seen by anyone until she’s a healthy weight? I keep seeing people say things like “are we allowed to talk about it now” and I’m confused because it seems like it’s all we’ve been talking about for months and nothing has changed with her scenario or with how society views eating disorders and weight shaming.

It’s also the “What about the children?” of it all that angers me. I really wonder how this upcoming generation of kids is going to view this time period because so many groups have lost their rights in the name of “protecting the children”.

I think what would be more productive would be to take fashion brands/cosmetics brands to task and talk more about their actual marketing campaigns. Like instead of saying "what kind of body do you have" say "what types of bodies are you promoting" if we want to talk about the Eternal Sunshine tour, what do the dancers look like on that tour (I have no idea I'm not a fan lol)? If we're looking at red carpets, who was invited? Instead of "I want less of this body" say "I want more of this body." Like what I see more is that inclusive brands get ripped to shreds over not having enough variety and exclusive brands get shrugged off. I do think it's possible to use individuals in a compilation to show trends but that needs to be done thoughtfully and not be about targeting one person.

if a celebrity displays the symptoms of an eating disorder, they arent some master puppeteer perpetuating the system, they are a victim of the system. we all know this but forget at convenient times, that celebrities are people, and are not immune, usually the opposite, to the social forces that can cause a variety of issues. now if a celebrity is going on a stage and telling people to do unhealthy things, that, you can criticize.

Thank god. I made a video about this too and it went nowhere and the discourse is feeling so scary. It feels like we’re trying to publicly shame and punish one specific person instead of addressing any systemic issue.

Restrictive EDs...also come from a place of white supremacy, tied to Fatphobia. and people who do want to talk about this(because we should be) should at least acknowledge this. Arianna Grande has a long history on ED tumbler...people have come forward saying this. People saying that we just shouldn't talk about this...doesnt sit right with me.

Unfortunately a whole lot of white people in this country are taught that the solution to social problems is to punish the offenders until the problem goes away.

People don’t know how eating disorders work. They think this is a choice Ariana Grande is making and not a disease that, like any other disease, is affecting her ability to prioritize anything else. There are also people who hate Ariana Grande because of the cheating scandal and now feel they’re justified in withholding grace and compassion as she’s clearly struggling. Then they weaponize her being a celebrity so they can moralize the content they’re making exploiting the disease they’re discussing. Doesn’t help that they bring up her having young fans as another excuse as if these young fans aren’t also gonna see y’all dissecting this woman in very cruel, condescending posts at her expense.

Eating disorders have little to do with weight. It’s commonly about trauma they are experiencing and a lack of control they feel around their life. They deserve support.

I feel like people often forget that racism/fascism has the common tool of health=morality and when we decide that we can “see” health in a person and tie that directly to weight more often than not. People always brush off policing bodies as “I’m just concerned for your health” but ultimately it is a form of ableism people feel most comfortable expressing. There is a narrow margin of what people deem acceptable to believe someone is healthy, they have to be a certain standard of skinny, but no one wants to swallow the fact that you cannot actually see health.

The best thing to do is disengage. If you don’t like it don’t give it attention and encourage others to do the same offline. In an attention economy looking away IS action, is POWER.

Agree with you! I will just say, to me, it feels most of the conversations around specifically someone like Ari is not to shame her at all but to keep the discourse available to young people on the internet so it doesnt go unchallenged- that the discourse isn’t just “she’s fine she’s just very thin”, no video I’ve seen are trying to address her directly. Specifically in her case I think it’s triggering because she and everyone around her is falling over themselves to say she’s “never been healthier” which… really doesn’t seem to be the case.

agree with everything u said. to this day people still behave as if a ED is something that is chosen rather than an illness that truly deludes you.

I would write a dissertation in this comment section about how being open to my Little Sis in my sorority about her eating disorder didn’t help at all. But being gentle with her whole talking to her family who eventually took her out of school and put her into a rehabilitation program DID help her.

I remember a lot of people having this conversation about the women in Wicked and it’s so gross to me that people who say they’re “body positive” while talking about women’s bodies like they know their medical history. It is so easy to talk about the harm our society does without attacking actual people

Even if she does have an ED do these people just want her to self isolate until she gain weight? Which would only help the self isolating nature of eating disorders.

Maybe instead of trying to police celebrities, just maybe we stop holding them up as the ideal everything and let them do their job, enjoy their work (or not) and go about our lives 🤷🏻
