Carrie-Anne Moss performed much of her own physical work as Trinity in The Matrix (1999). Before filming began, Moss spent around six months training with the Hong Kong based fight team led by Yuen Woo-ping. She had no previous martial arts background beyond a karate aerobics class, so the training covered kung fu, wire work, fights, and the physical movements required for the role. Her first screen test alone involved three hours of running, kung fu, and fight choreography. Moss later recalled that she was so exhausted afterward that she couldn’t walk for several days. She performed Trinity’s opening rooftop sequence herself, including the wire work. Stunt coordinator Scott Rogers also confirmed that Moss performed the rooftop running and jumping, as well as the 360 degree wire rig movement where Trinity appears to twist in midair. A stunt double was used for some of the more dangerous movements, including the dive through the window. Moss also injured her ankle while preparing for the famous lobby scene, where Trinity runs up a wall and performs a cartwheel. She had learned the movement only a few days earlier and later recalled being in tears during training because she wasn’t sure she could do it. The physical training became a major part of Moss’s preparation for Trinity. She later said that the process helped her understand the character through movement rather than simply studying her personality or background. Much of what appears on screen is therefore actually Moss performing the choreography herself, with stunt doubles used for specific movements where the production considered the risk too high. #matrix #carrieannemoss
