@rpgbotdotnet: DnD 5e expects 23 rounds of combat per long rest according to the 2014 DMG implicitly and according to Mike Mearls explicitly. The reality is obviously much different, and that’s why DnD can often feel unbalanced. It’s balanced based on assumptions of attrition that it can’t reliably deliver.

Hot take: That's why Gritty Realism should be the default rest system, and the current 8 hour long-rest system should be for Epic Fantasy.

6-8 combat encounters in a day isn't an adventure, it's a war

the last campaign I was in, we might do 28 long rests between each round of combat.

If your players are robots that can complete their turns in 20 seconds or under, sure.

Fundamentally, I think the issue is that D&D is designed to be a dungeon crawler with some light roleplay mechanics, but the designers want to pretend that it's a high-fantasy epic adventure. Except high-fantasy epic adventures simply don't have 6-8 encounters a day. That's not the place those kinds of adventures move at. They have designed a game that should be played one way and then trained players to play in the exact opposite way. It's so bizzare. 😭

First level characters absolutely cannot go 23 rounds of combat. They can barely go 3. And 20th level characters can go all day, as long as they don’t face any true threats. This means you should start with one encounter per day, but end with 10. It’s a terrible curve. I’d love more resources to start, and far less but more powerful resources to end.

the 6-8 encounter thing is just based on the shitty module method of 13 room dungeons with 3-4 goblins a room, it's antiquated and silly

And that alone tells you that the designers do not understand how the game is actually being played

my party takes 30 minutes MINIMUM for a combat, 6 encounters would take away 90% of the roleplay, the side quests and stupid fun things

My argument isn't that you are wrong. It's that it's not fun. Especially depending on the class. Some function much better with fewer rests, others have to spend entire encounters not doing anything because they can't afford to waste one of their precious spell slots.

saying "this is how this was designed" is not the same as "this is what D&D 5e expects of you" Too many arguments on this topic are arguments about language, not rules. D&D is designed this way, that is correct. however based on the actual rules and design, 5e absolutely does not expect you to do 23 rounds per long rest. there are no class mechanics that survive 6-8 combat encounters per day. give me any character under level 10, and choose any creature that RAW recommends them to fight, and even with a short rest between every encounter no standard character is surviving that. so you can say "yes the designer says you're supposed to have 23 rounds of combat" but realistically none of the mechanics support that.

combat is literally the most boring part of DnD. 6-8 encounters would mean there is no space for any social encounters! This simply was not the intention in the game design!

So if I am a third level wizard, I only get about 6 spells per day. I get to use one spell per every three encounters. Yay.

ive been saying people dont want to play dnd they want to play a role playing game and just refuse to look at other systems that are better designed around what they want to play. many other systems out there dnd at its core is a war game for combat encounters and not much else.

I don't think I've had 23 rounds of combat in over a year of playing in my game. Of course, I'm not playing D&D. I didn't know it was this bad, though.

Bruh it's insanity, we usually only have 1 MAYBE 2 combat encounters per session, it would take 4 - 8 sessions of play to reach that quota, which for my group would be 4 - 8 WEEKS. Imagine playing the game for 2 MONTHS without recouping your abilities and resources

when you think 23 rounds is 2 minutes 18 seconds it sounds reasonable to expect but as players that's so long in real time lol

I do wonder where that expectation comes from, mechanically speaking. is it the lack of attrition that days of adventuring could have in previous editions? is it due to how many spellslots caster's have? is it some perfect storm of abilities and features?
