However, during the production in the scene where Barabbas and Jesus exchange a look, he experienced what he described as a profound spiritual encounter. Sarubbi later explained that Mel Gibson had instructed him not to look directly at Jim Caviezel throughout the day before filming the scene, so their eye contact would be genuine and powerful on camera. When he finally looked into Caviezel’s eyes during the take, he said he felt “an electric current” pass through him and described the moment as if he were looking at Jesus Himself. The experience deeply affected him, leading him to explore Christianity, and he eventually converted to the Catholic faith.
