@missclairebenjamin: How to handle a manager who puts you down… Working for a manager who makes belittling comments and puts you down can be incredibly challenging, and it can often be difficult to know how to respond in the moment. The example I’ve shown here demonstrates a response on the higher end of the assertiveness scale. The key takeaway from this video is how powerful a pause can be. Pausing helps you regain control of the situation and can non-verbally signal that something has crossed a boundary. From there, you can calmly explain how the comment came across and give the other person the opportunity to clarify or rephrase what they said. Of course, this is easier said than done. Responding this way requires emotional regulation. When we’re triggered, without the skills of emotional regulation we will become reactive, freeze, or shut down. Emotional regulation is one of the most powerful skills to master if you want to be someone who influences rather than reacts. 💬 Have you ever been in a situation like this?
