The game was delayed due to lightning strikes 6 miles away. In Florida, a storm six miles away can quickly be right above you. You think our stadiums, in a state that deals with hurricanes and monsoon level rain constantly, aren’t designed to drain properly? I work in architecture. We know how to deal with water. And we do have lightning protection, but where a lightning strikes is never a certainty, it’s an all probability. Now, if you want to take your chances at standing in the rain, on a large wet field, feel free. We are taught as children that is the last place you want to be. That and under a tree or on a large exposed structure (like an open-air stadium). Theme Parks close their rides and have staff seek shelter if there are lightning strikes in the area. Kids don’t get released from school if there’s lightning strikes in the area. The US sees up to 200 million lightning strikes a YEAR. All of Europe sees in the 10s of millions. If anyone knows lightning safety, it’s us.
