FYI many of these “third gender” categories exist primarily not as a more enlightened and expansive understanding of gender, but as a means of degendering and segregating binary trans people, most commonly trans women, from the respectable society. Many of these communities of gender diverse people were also initially described as a “third gender” by western anthropologists as a contrast to “western transsexuals” who they bore open and blatant disdain towards. I would *highly* recommend the essay “The Third Sex” by Talia Bhatt for more on this topic.
