i get your view but your take is giving "it’s hopeless to reduce, so just go with it" what i could personally suggest for example iphones, is (refurbed) backmarket. an already used, but in new condition phone is sm better and better for the environment. and streaming services i don’t understand myself when there are like 2000 sites to watch stuff and listen to music on

Obviously it’s not just ai, the problem is that generative ai is owned by billionaires that have RECENTLY planted these data centres in areas of poverty, taking up farm land, creating noise pollution and light pollution, and people are going without water in their homes in their faucets because of them. This is what’s happening with the data centers for Gemini, chat gpt, sora etc. they are flooded with constant demand and are PURPOSELY using millions of gallons of CLEAN water. I do think it’s of course the corporations at fault, but it really doesn’t hurt you to not use a generative ai platform that takes away people’s creativity and thinking skills, actively further normalising reliance on it to the point we are destroying our brains and the planet. It’s really not that hard. Do your research and stop bundling it all in together with technology when this is a very recent crisis BECAUSE of generative ai specifically.

generative Ai and tool ai for things like algorithms are different, yes a bunch of things run off data centers and use various forms of ai, Generative ai and the LLMs are the ones causing an increase of the data centers being built, but generative Ai requires a lot more power as well which is why we see center like Elon musk Colossus using illegal numbers Natural gas generators. I fear this is genuinely a really tone deaf and dare I say ignorant take from you.

the issue is not just AI as a thing but how companies are forcing it into our throats in every possible way. Like yea data centers and water shortages are huge problems on their own but the way we don’t actually have any power to cut ourselves out of it…. that’s mad irritating, also our data being involved with ai training (like this new TikTok update for example)? horrendous. the hate train is absolutely valid as well as necessary, people are rightfully terrified of the direction this world is headed. Nobody’s getting mad at AI detecting cancer at its early stages, we just can’t stand this far too easily accessible generative slop that’s becoming more and more dangerous
