@raymond.reads: Acknowledging anti-Blackness in the Asian community, and the fact that different POCs face different types of discrimination, does not invalidate your own experiences of racism and prejudice. Learning to move past defensiveness in conversations about race needs to happen for us to make any sort of progress #lawtok #cyruscarmackbelton #asian #asiantiktok

We have to realize it’s not the Black community oppressing us. Boycott is not racism. Many Asians do not believe in yt supremacy even when they experience racism. These conversations need to happen within families to include history and empathy for other communities.

I’m indigenous & the anti blackness that is entrenched in my community is scary. I continuously have to unlearn what I’ve been taught to believe.

The thing that i think a lot of asians don’t understand is that this isn’t about one isolated incident. A lot of them are acting like Rick Chow was just one bad actor and nothing else has ever happened and “oh we’re the good Asians, don’t lump us in with them. He was Chinese and we’re not”. Do y’all think there’s no anti-blackness in your Asian community? Do you really think that your corner of the Asian community is some pure, good, saintly exception to a rule that has been proven time and time again? Also, i feel it’s misleading to call this a boycott. Boycott implies something organized with demands and a leader talking to other leaders. This isn’t the Montgomery Bus Boycott. There is no plan. There are no leaders laying out a list of demands. No council of negroes is sitting down writing a list of things for Asians to check off before Black people will shop there again.

It feels like a lot of of us have learned the behavior of white women tears here. And this response has been overwhelming in the noise that it’s added to discourse. None of it is actually productive. It’s just noise that is decentering and distracting from the voices that need to be heard right now.

Something I’ve realized is other POC perceive black ppl cracking jokes as bullying. & internalize it when it’s more of act of endangerment we do with people we like are our comfortable with. Black people social norms are so misinterpreted

You get it! The minimization of racism that Black people face can make it difficult for us to validate Asian experiences.

thank you Raymond for being a voice of reason ❤️i agree 100%! it's very hypocritical and upsetting to see some people in our community become defensive and bring up stop Asian hate crime incidents as a way to justify or deflect from the verdict instead of addressing the injustice and having honest conversations about the issues at hand

folks are upset at our reaction to transgressions rather than taking issue with the transgressions that are making us have a reaction. its like getting upset with the kid finally stands up to the bully, rather than being upset with the bully.

Black people can acknowledge racism while also dealing with colorism in our own community. You can experience hate and dish it out, and being truthful about how those things can go hand in hand is where we start solving the problem. Black Americans especially have never disregarded others' plight because of the racism and colorism we receive; it actually makes a lot of us more understanding of the struggles of others and can empathize with them because of it.

Thank u sir I really love and respect the Asian community as a whole. But seeing some takes online have been disappointing and hurtful because I want to be friends and allies and have poc solidarity. I don’t believe all Asian ppl are racist and I will support those who rock with us❤️I appreciate you ❤️

I once made a video basically being confused why Asian people don’t gatekeep more instead of trying to capitalize off of gentrification… like… in a “you deserve better” kind of way and you’d think I said a slur by some of the comments. A third of the comments are Asian people implying black people are worse than white people, and respectfully that is crazy considering the crimes against humanity that white people committed against Asian people for like decades nonstop? The bombings? The wars? Like what’s the scale here?

I’m seeing more and more asian creators allowing subtle anti-blackness that looks very similar to white supremacy and “all lives matter” ever since the Cyrus case, and it’s so disappointing to see that.

I think people hear antiblackness and knee jerk but need to understand hijo harder and separate that into if their community’s has issues with colorism, texturism and featurism then they do have an inherent antiblackness problem. Ñ
