@dr.starkid: What would you see if you were an alien astronomer in the andromeda galaxy with a hypothetical telescope powerful enough to see onto the surface of the Earth? #Science #space #life #LearnOnTikTok #learnontiktokcontest
Every time I look at my image of Andromeda, I wonder if someone there as a similar image of the Milky Way.

here's something I've wondered since I was a teenager: if you had a constant view of the planet's surface WHILE moving towards in at a near-light speed, would it the movement of what's happening over there just... speed up?? if someone answered this, I would be so grateful 🥲

is there another object that refracts light like a telescope like the edges of black hole that we could use?

wait, people always say you’ll see what was happening in the past and all but animals don’t emit light, objects don’t emit light, so where tf is the light coming from that’s travelling to the “alien”?, earth don’t emit light the sun does

Have we thought that the materials we use on earth to make a telescope maybe the reason why you imagine that it’d only be possible if they had a gigantic 13 trillion kilometers diameter telescope?? What if they’ve advanced materials (that we’re yet to discover) that would enable them to have such a telescope in their pockets and maybe the reason why they’ve not visited has something to deal our low intelligence and they don’t find us interesting??

That is one of the premises behind dark forest theory. If they know there is life in a planet. They know they just see the history of that planet. That planet might be technologically very advanced now and they cannot make sure the planet’s intention. They cannot take a risk to communicate because communication takes time and the intentions can change. The only logical move is to annihilate the planet and life as soon as you find out

If you’re looking through a telescope, you’re seeing the earth in real time?

What diameter telescope would you need to study an exoplanet orbiting Alpha Centauri that’s only about 4 light years away.?

Seems like an outrageous size but who’s to say that an Andromedain doesn’t have one? They probably have those as their hobby telescopes.

This formula is accurate for our current technology/telescopes and understanding. But how do we know the aliens don’t have different resources and technologies outside of our scope of understanding that are capable of getting the job done a lot more efficiently? ie their telescope doesn’t need to be that big because it works differently than what we have the capability of building on earth.

Regular Dude :
so if we wanna search for advanced aliens in the andromeda galaxy they had to be in that advanced state 2.5 million years earlier right? if so now imagine what kinda advanced state they r now in at this time. 🫠 if they survived of course 😅

How complete would that telescope need to be for what resolutions? Like instead of building a solar system size telescope we build thousands of telescopes to orbit the sun at varying distance and combine their data together to act as one telescope.

Trying to understand the statement: "Humans showed up in the Americas...". Are you saying thats where humans first emerged or thats when humans were first spotted in that side of the world after they had emerged elsewhere?

i would assume (hopefully) the aliens (if they are real) realise that intelligent life has probably formed in 2 million years

Interesting thought experiment. But even if we knew everything about what aliens could see, we’d still be left with the biggest question: why does anything exist at all? ⚔️🔥

Use gravitational lens and make a telescope out of it. A better solution than creating a trillion kilometer telescope.

okay, let's say we can travel that far through some sci-fi/magic way. do we travel into what we're seeing, and therefore into the past? or do we travel to the present and therefore what we're seeing is low-key irrelevant?
