I’ve been trying to put this into words for a long time. because it’s one of those things I feel deeply but struggle to explain without sounding like I’m romanticizing pain. I’m not. I promise. I’m just trying to tell you what I see. what I feel. what I’ve noticed in the men who’ve made me feel the most safe. they’ve all been through something. it’s not the hardship itself that’s attractive. it’s what survives it. 1. They’ve already met the worst version of themselves and came back from it. men who’ve never been tested don’t know what they’re capable of in their worst moments. men who have? they’ve already faced that version of themselves. they know what they’re made of. and there’s a quiet confidence that comes from that self-knowledge that nothing else can replicate. 2. They stopped performing strength and started living it younger men perform toughness. it’s loud. it’s defensive. it needs an audience. men who’ve been through real hardship don’t need to perform anything anymore. their strength isn’t for show. it just exists. quietly. in the way they handle problems. in the way they stay calm when everything isn’t. in the way they show up even when it costs them something. 3. Their empathy is earned not assumed there’s a difference between a man who says “I understand” because he thinks he should and a man who says it because he actually does. men who’ve suffered know what it feels like to need someone and not have them. to fall apart in private. to rebuild alone. that experience makes them see other people’s pain differently. more clearly. more gently. 4.
