…but then I’m adding calcium chloride to prevent or at the least mitigate my plaster dissolving and metals corroding?

David :
keep using that dichlor and watch your stabilizer levels shoot up. Liquid sodium hypochlorite is the way to go.

BIG G POOLS SERVICE :
Cal‑hypo doesn’t automatically cause calcium buildup in a saltwater pool. It only adds calcium. Whether scale forms depends on the overall water balance — especially the Saturation Index (LSI/CSI). If pH, alkalinity, and calcium are in range, cal‑hypo is perfectly fine to use.

You need calcium in your pool

Actually, that’s exactly backward. Trichlor is the one you have to be careful with because it’s 55% cyanuric acid by weight. In a salt pool, your generator is already producing chlorine; adding more CYA just leads to over-stabilization and 'chlorine lock,' where your free chlorine stops being effective. Cal-hypo doesn’t add a single drop of stabilizer, so it doesn't kill your LSI balance or force a massive water drain in two years like trichlor does.

I’m a service technician and I have 60 poles that I take care of of a week. I use Cal hypo and salt pools when there’s an issue in algae you should never put super chlorinate on a salt cell. It will burn faster than you could believe the low output mode with pairing it with a smart shock like TriCor or Dior is great, but for him to say you can completely not use Cal hypo is a debate.
