As a Chinese I think this is so well said, and this is the actual situation happening, that there is no clear censorship 'rule' on LGBTQ topics from the government , and everyone, all the companies and medias, are GUESSING what would be censored and would not be... and it very often results in a lot of funny euphemistic expressions that makes everyone laughs their ass off😂

also, have you seen the Chinese lesbian dating show? it's on YouTube called lelales! they were originally going to film in shanghai but were censored so moved the production to Thailand

As someone grew up in China and moved to the UK 5 years ago I think I can answer your question. Firstly, I think your confusion and insightfulness are both incredibly accurate because you are just about to touch the core of the Chinese way: “Why a lot of things are so vague and indefinite but seems working at the same time?” As someone grew up in China I would say this culture of homophobia and the structured oppression against gay people which is embedded in Christianity does not exist in China. As a very conservative country there are no laws against being gay but there are no laws to recognize gay marriage as well. The situation is exactly what you felt, it’s pretty chill of being gay in daily life but it can’t be the focus for people to talk about of gay marriage under the spotlight

that's cuz CGTN and Phoenix News aren't typical Chinese state media. They tend to have a bit more journalistic freedom when covering topics that aren't directly related to the Chinese government.

As a Colombian, I can see the path bc it's the one we had. Most of our rights here were gained through the Supreme Court. Step by step. Still a lot of homophobia here even when legally we're one of the most advanced in the region. I read Chinese SC rules against lgbtq discrimination. So they're in the correct path maybe not as fast.

LGBT is not a mainstream topic of discussion in China and is not officially addressed. However, it has already permeated various aspects of Chinese society and daily life. Promoting and spreading positive narratives about LGBT in mainstream discourse and maintaining an optimistic view of daily life are two non-conflicting matters. Clearly, the latter is more important and aligns better with the actual equal rights of LGBT individuals.
