Instead of using cranes to lift each log one by one, the entire barge is engineered to tilt to one side. When the barge reaches its destination, hydraulic systems or ballast tanks shift the vessel's weight, causing the deck to roll sideways. As the angle increases, gravity takes over and the logs slide off the deck into the water within seconds. This may look wasteful, but the logs are not being discarded. Most of these logs are destined for sawmills and are transported by water because it is one of the cheapest and most efficient methods available. The logs float naturally and are collected inside floating containment areas called log booms. Tugboats then tow these massive bundles of timber to processing facilities, where they are sorted, cut, and turned into lumber and other wood products.
