I did this. And now I’m in my mid to late 40s. And I’m so glad we stayed. The late childhood before kids can take themselves somewhere is a little rough but luckily the whole world shut down then anyway. 12-16 year olds who can get themselves to their friends houses or go do things on their own is GOLDEN.

The commute isn't worth it. I would rather be broke and live in New York City then spend 2 hours a day traveling to and from a soulless suburb

Growing up in the city was great lol, this just feels like coping for moving. The big part you're missing is that you will spend far less time with your kids because of commuting.

Raised two boys on the UWS for the past 19 years. It was awesome and we are never leaving. But you have to have money. It’s expensive. $342K / year to run our household. Tack on another $150K if your kids go to private school.

The idea of moving the suburbs with my wife and two kids sounds a lot more exhausting than staying where we are in Brooklyn, to be honest.

My 27 year old self would say “hell no I’m never living in the city”. Then I spent almost a decade in NYC. Now I’m out again living in a walkable suburb where you use your car like once a week at most and it’s the best

As someone who grew up in the city and lived in multiple other cities before moving back to NYC, I never once considered moving to any suburbs, never. I can’t imagine living outside of a city.

Well we will be living in our 5 bedroom house. Going to the big pool or kayaking on the Long Island sound and riding our bikes…. In Westchester .. (for the price of my not really a 2 bedroom apartment)

A day in the city is far more enjoyable when you’re visiting from the country than when you’re living there.

All of the people that I know that are ready for families moved to Connecticut, especially during the pandemic. The myth about NYC is independent of economic reality; the heartbeat stopped during COVID. And although it may be getting better in some ways, it’s always a factor of pros versus cons, as much as it’s intuitive. Don’t swim upstream if you aren’t equipped like a salmon.

Sam CC :
Suburb quality and city quality are inversely correlated. New York suburbs are terrible. But then, like, St. Louis has great suburbs.
