I love this BUT, it’s the cost and management. Larger farms find it easier to keep them in a barn for less management. We love to pasture but I couldn’t imagine talking up and repairing more fences. We barely have time to get our cover crop off before getting crops in. I can’t wait to see this in the future and see how we can make it more possible we need the land. We can’t make more of it

Yes yes! My father and now brother run our 900+ acre SE MN farm all regenerative/ no till/cover crop farm (started back in late 1990s slowly) he grazes livestock on cover crops most of the year, manure and soil disturbance is excellent for soil health. He goes around to farmers all over MN to educate and convince them to stop tilling/pesticide use, and switch to Regenerative.

Did you run a designed experiment with different land segments randomized to different treatments (eg cows, no cows, or cover crop A vs crop B)?

If you’re not already familiar, and since you’re from the midwest, you should look up Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie and the research they’re doing there with their bison. Interesting stuff!

I worked on a cotton project that used sheep to sheep down the cover crops. Doubled SOC in 1 year! PS I’m a tampon CEO, not a farmer. Big believer that downstream supply chain should shoulder some of the risk.

We love to run cattle on our cover crop fields. We use mainly rye and have used radishes and turnips for cover crop grazing.

Mark Shepard run various livestock through his orchards and field crops. He runs cattle, swine, turkeys, chickens and sheep in carefully timed passes.

Are you tracking compaction as well? Farmers are worried about that but I feel like it’s going to be distributed enough it’s not an issue and your data could reassure them
