That is a soil plugger, not aerator. Aerator actually extracts core plugs

Honestly people should stop planting grass and choose low water plants like white clover.

You do not want to aerate your yard this time of year. That will create a ton of weed growth. Wait till the fall.

It’s called Hydrophobic. Spray humic acid on your lawn to help break up the soil. Water it in immediately. In the Fall, either hire someone or rent a machine to aerate (plugs, not spikes) your lawn. I had this problem with the house I bought a few years ago. It’s taken me two years of careful timing to bring my lawn back to life. Be patient.

or.. hear me our, buy native plants and grasses and stop mowing. keep the grass just below the county maximum length or clover if you want it lower. there's ways to help native pollinators insects mammals birds and wildlife

this is great, but it would be better to kill your lawn and replace it with native plants. I’m in CA and have removed my grass, planted natives and mulched with shredded tree bark and now i NEVER water… besides what mother nature gives us. All my plants are thriving and flowering. The number of bees, hummingbirds, and other beautiful insects frequent my garden all the time! It’s a great alternative to grass and saves you money in the long run.

That’s not gonna work as well as you think it will..you need to pull the cores out..not push them in. Mechanical aeration for the win

You can do what it’s called incremental watering when something is so compacted you basically wet water sit on it for a bit and then you come back and wet it again and then you come back and wet it again but you have to do it like multiple times day for that water to start penetrating down and finally getting that dirt, wet and allowing moisture to go further and further deeper into the dirt it also soften it because moisture can help helps expand the dirt a little bit
