I completely agree. I was talking to someone about rock climbing and how it wasn’t something I would try. He followed up with, “Why? What’s stopping you?” It left an impression due to his level of curiosity in wanting to understand. It felt nice

This is good but, “tell me more about that,” is my favorite follow up for literally any conversation. But none of it works if you don’t have active listening skills.

but if someone asked me what I like about hiking...I would feel attacked lol. it's got to be less obvious. don't make the other person do all the heavy lifting or else it's pretty transparent you're mining for info
