I always tell people that "A person with a green thumb is just a plant mass murderer that never gave up."

Maybe not pressure, but that’s still a living thing… nothing alive should ever be disposable!

As a life long plant person… we do not talk about HOW much of your success or failure is about the actual house. I used to have a house with a bathroom that had 16ft tall ceilings, glass block walls on the east and north corner of the bathroom floor to ceiling, and a skylight. I could bring a nearly dead plant in there it would spring to life, grow huge and bloom. My snake plant bloomed constantly in the space. My Hoya grew huge and bloomed constantly. I then moved and there is not a single room that gets enough light to let my plant thrive let alone bloom. BTW my Hoya is from a cutting off my mothers, that came from my grandmothers…. That plant has basically been living for more than 70 years.

do you have a list of plants that are perfect for this mindset? plants that do incredibly well for a few months but wouldn't likely make it years?

Makes sense, at least until I look at my African Violet. Mom picked it up on a discount shelf and it is still going more than 25 years later. Even went with me to college

House plants have been around longer then the 70s and they were meant to survive. Considering how much environmental damage the nursery industry causing, treating plants as a disposable short term crops totally go’s against the love of nature plant lovers have. I started working in the industry because i love nature but the longer I’ve been in the industry the more I realise what a horrible industry it is.

If plants were disposable then what happens with all the plastic turnover that the industry produces? I sincerely doubt people would recycle their plastic pots…

My house plants live outside in the spring and summer, and this year they will be moved into a greenhouse during the winter.

my manager said the change came about when people became more eco, and didn't want to throw away plant after plant as it's false economy. So we now upsell plant products, and make sure our stock quality is good enough for long term health. But in reality, if you're not green fingered, an orchid should be treated as a substitute bouquet of flowers, it'll last longer wherever you put it, and you can buy a new one afterwards if that's what you prefer to do.

Yep this is why I dislike the idea of "some plants are sold by dishonest plant growers purely to die so you buy more". Some living things are ephemeral, to be enjoyed for a moment and then discarded. There's a convo to be had about that being wasteful but it's not deceitful that growers sell short-term plants for certain purposes like holidays or specific seasons.

Such an interesting take. I have had this mindset for some time. It's nice to hear you say this. The last thing we need is societal pressure dictating our lives.

I have the opposite problem, I can’t resist propagating my plants when I do maintenance and pruning. They multiply!!
