this whole thing just made me think of the time a journeyman "mechanic" told my sister it was totally fine to pull used pads off a yard car and use those instead of buying new. he did not replace her very well grooved rotors. I literally could not with that shit. I still get mad when I think about it 😂

I would have pressed the pedal to extend the pistons out so I could make sure theres no metal trapped in the folds of the rubber boot

I had a buddy of mine at my old job check my brakes out before I big trip, and this is exactly what happened. The caliper mounting bracket bolts came off, and so did the slide pin bolts. Almost had my life cut short in the middle of nowhere. I don't let anyone else work on my vehicle anymore, and I always, always, always torque bolts to spec
