On August 7, 1829, Felix Mendelssohn stepped into a cave on a Scottish island. He was 20 years old. The cave was called Fingal's Cave — carved by the sea into the basalt cliffs of the island of Staffa in the Hebrides. Hexagonal columns of rock, a long dark chamber, and the ocean echoing inside in patterns no architect could design. Mendelssohn stood there and listened. That evening, he wrote a letter to his sister Fanny. And in the middle of the letter — not in a sketchbook, not on manuscript paper, just in an ordinary letter between siblings — he wrote down the opening bars of what would become this piece. Twenty-one notes. The first idea of the Hebrides Overture, written in a cave, sent home in an envelope. He completed the overture the following year and revised it again in 1832. What you hear in those opening bars is almost impossible to explain technically. Low strings and bassoons, moving in a wave pattern that somehow sounds exactly like water, exactly like rock, exactly like the space between the two. Robert Schumann heard it and called it
On August 7, 1829, Felix Mendelssohn stepped into a cave on a Scottish island. Robert Schumann heard it and called it "a great musical painting." It's considered one of the very first pieces in the history of classical music to translate a specific place — a real, nameable place you can still visit today — into sound so precise that anyone who has ever been near the sea recognises it immediately. Fingal's Cave still exists. You can take a boat to Staffa. Stand inside it. Hear the same waves Mendelssohn heard. The opening of this overture will already be playing in your head before the first echo reaches you. 💬 Did you know he wrote the first notes in a letter to his sister? Tell me in the comments. 🎹 Mendelssohn – The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26 ("Fingal's Cave") Follow @greatestmusiccomposer for the stories behind the greatest music ever written. #mendelssohn #overture #classicalmusic #orchestra #symphony
