Horticultural grit can be expensive and heavy. You can also use sharp sand or any type of grit.

I'm a complete newbie to the gardening scene but I am trying to get to know my garden...! I have recently bought and potted a hydrangea. I was told (by my gardener) not to dehead hydrangeas as when the frost comes in the winter it will get to the root of the plant. I'd like to propagate my own hydrangea. How should I proceed and when?
