However, the photographer lived only a few months after this supposed recognition, as he fell into a deep depression that eventually led to his death. In fact, he was enjoying worldwide fame, moving from magazines to television shows. His depression reportedly began after one live TV program where viewers were allowed to call in. A person called and asked him: “What happened to the little girl? What became of her?” He replied: “I didn’t wait to find out. I had a flight to catch right after.” The caller then responded: “Well, I’ll tell you this: there were two vultures that day—one of them had a camera.” The words of that unknown person echoed constantly in his mind, leading him into depression and eventually to suicide. Kevin Carter might still be alive today if only he had picked up the little girl and taken her to the United Nations feeding center she was weakly trying to reach.
