@various.archives: Born Oscar Aristides de la Renta y Fiallo on 22 July 1932 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The youngest of seven children and the only boy. His mother died of multiple sclerosis when he was eighteen. He left for Madrid to study painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando. While there, he began sketching for fashion houses to earn money. When Francesca Lodge, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Spain, saw his sketches, she commissioned him to design a gown for her daughter. The dress appeared on the cover of Life magazine. He apprenticed under Cristobal Balenciaga in Madrid, whom he considered his mentor. In 1961, he moved to Paris to work as a couture assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin. Diana Vreeland advised him to move to New York, where he worked for Elizabeth Arden before joining Jane Derby. When Derby died in 1965, de la Renta took over the label and built his own name from there. From 1993 to 2002, he designed haute couture for Balmain, the first Dominican to lead a French couture house. He served as President of the CFDA twice. He won the Coty Award in 1967 and 1968, the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and CFDA Designer of the Year in 2000 and 2007. He dressed every First Lady from Jacqueline Kennedy to Michelle Obama. He founded the Casa del Nino orphanage in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
