Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk has claimed that former first lady Michelle Obama is a man. Errol Musk made the claim on the ‘Wide Awake Podcast’. He joins a large number of conspiracy theorists who have long pedalled the lie that Michelle Obama is transgender. In 2020, a photoshopped image of Michelle Obama started circulating online, with conspiracy theorists believing it to be real and corroborating their belief that she was born male. Michelle addressed this baseless claim in her 2018 memoir ‘Becoming’, writing: ‘I've heard about the swampy parts of the internet that question everything about me, right down to whether I'm a woman or a man.’ This conspiracy is part of a wider phenomenon known as transvestigating. Which according to GLAAD is a ‘hate-driven’ ‘conspiracy theory’ that ‘emerged in early 2017’. ‘The practice maliciously targets cisgender public figures’ then “investigates” them offering fake pseudo-scientific “evidence” that they are transgender’ ‘with the underlying bigoted and ignorant implication that being a transgender person is a bad thing’. Tranvestigations are often aimed at Women of Colour, from Caster Semenya, to Imane Khelif, these women have been accused of being biological men simply for the fact they don’t align with eurocentric body standards. Tennis star Serena Williams has also faced her fair share of these conspiracies, which she addressed in a reddit post in 2017, writing: ‘I've been called man because I appeared outwardly strong.
