Two million Koreans killed in three years. And most people have never heard it called an atrocity. At Penny Appeal Canada's "Voices of Resilience" event, Bassem Youssef draws a comparison that reframes how we understand the selective nature of historical memory. The Vietnam War is widely discussed, documented, and mourned. Nearly 3 million Vietnamese killed over 19 years. That history has been processed, debated, and at least partially acknowledged. The Korean War sits right between World War Two and Vietnam. And it is called the forgotten war. Bassem argues it is not forgotten by accident. It is deliberately not talked about because the scale of what happened there does not fit the narrative. Two million people killed in three years. To put that in immediate context, that is the entire population of Gaza, erased in the same timeframe that we are currently watching Gaza be destroyed. The pattern Bassem is pointing to is not about any single conflict. It is about which mass killings get memorialized, which ones get debated in classrooms, and which ones get quietly buried between more convenient historical chapters. History is written by those with the power to choose what gets remembered. And what gets forgotten is rarely an accident. . #Muslimi #BassemYoussef #PennyAppealCanada #ForgottenWar #HistoricalMemory
