Fewer books on the our huge reading list... Not necessarily a sad post... Nowadays books are "destroyed" by nobody reading them anymore. And more and more is published. I am myself self-publishing a collection of my posts on tik tok...

As someone who studies history of art, ppl have this false notion about the library thinking it existed for like a thousand years or something but it was founded by Alexander the Great (couple of centuries before its destruction) and they were actually multiple episodes of damage rather than just one fire destruction caused by Julius Caesar and even that fact is debated by many historians

Even to anatomical studies, the fall of the Alexandrian library is really sad

I was genuinely surprised to hear Ibn Qutaybah mentioned. I’m not Arabic, but Arabic poetry has always struck me as incredibly beautiful and emotionally resonant. Even in translation, there’s a depth of feeling that feels remarkably timeless

The Grand Library of Córdoba, is also another devastating lost, in the 10th-century Islamic Spain or what was called back then Al-Andalus Caliph Al-Hakam II built a library containing upwards of 400,000 books, including unique works of Andalusian poetry, philosophy, and early Arabic translations of lost Greek texts. When the city fell, and Christians took power, Historians reports that a priest historically identified as "Qambiz" led the burning of whatever books came into his possession, While the physical books perished, their contents survived through Latin translations, which sparked the European Renaissance, it’s fascinating if you look it up.

Dr Louis Feldman, my renowned classics professor, said thanks to the church, I believe we have only 0.1 percent of classical antiquity lit.
