@pdavisjones: Flock cameras perform 20 billion license plate scans per month. Already, these cameras are in more than 5,000 communities around the country, and they have indexed almost four and a half million unique license plates. The data they generate is compelling. Not only has it been used to solve more than 700,000 crimes, including 23 homicides and kidnappings, but it's also compelling to police officers. So far, there have been charges against 18 police officers who have used this data to track, stalk, and harass people for their personal reasons. The erosion of our privacy has been so gradual that it's almost hard to feel how far we've come. Today, for example, Agencies across the U.S. government have openly stated that they would rather buy personally identifiable data about us from third-party vendors who typically sell that data to help corporations target us with ads rather than go through the headache of obtaining a warrant. But there is a reason that they would have to obtain a warrant, and that is the Fourth Amendment, which guarantees our right to privacy. Government agencies have argued that if corporations can buy this data, they should be able to buy it too. But there's a key difference between a corporation and a government, and that's that the government has a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence. Corporations do not have that. I know they have updated the criteria for allowing searches. Now to do a search there has to be a case number associated and a reason listed for the search that leaves a distinct digital trail that is auditable identifies each individual user. So hopefully this will cut down on the abuses of this mostly useful tool.

setting the speed limit to 5mph on the interstate would save how many lives? we need to fight this surveillance because we don't ever get the freedoms back that they take away. it is as simple as that. I'm old enough to remember being able to meet people as they get off the airplane at the airport. at least one generation has no idea what that even looks like, the Overton window has shifted.
