You are totally right, Eefje. My response may have been too short to explain myself. I'm all for equality and there is still tons of work to do. Women are still penalised globally for this. I love for example the way certain countries handle this by making the rules the same for men and women so companies can't discriminate. Even here in Belgium it's far from perfect. My wife is a teacher and while she did have to be pause her career it had a small impact overall. So yes I take back my remark because it wasn't nuanced. Thanks for pointing this out.

It really depends on the support network you have, good luck restarting your career quickly when you have no one to help with the child-rearing

"you don't have to pause your career" it is literally a scheduled illness. there is special leave for it from basically every workplace because there is never going to be a time anyone, including the government, expects you to take longer off? not even if you get cancer?

being denied a promotion because the company was inflexible on the work hours for childcare needs. I.e. my partner couldn't work every weekend because daycare on weekends isnt a thing

Imo, as a man i will never have to deal with it but i have a lot of respect for giving birth. I cant imagine carrying a child in my belly for 9 months. The whole process impacting how I feel, what I eat , what I do, etc. and then having to push it out when the time comes. For me all of this requires a lot of strength. Everything should be done to make the whole process easier for women and of course mothers should receive a little bit more money from countries so they dont have to sacrifice one thing for another
