It’s with a shattered heart that we share the loss of our beautiful Big Ben. Ben was a giant Percheron Amish plow horse we rescued from the direct ship pen in Bowie, Texas, where horses are hidden from the public eye and loaded straight onto trucks, taken across the border for meat consumption. When Zela and I first saw him standing beside his best friend Roman, both of their heads hung low in complete defeat, I knew there was no way we were leaving without them. Ben’s body told the story of a lifetime of labor. His spine was deformed from years of pulling plows. He was emaciated, exhausted, and then discarded after giving everything he had. Yet beneath all that heartbreak, there was still the gentlest soul imaginable. We brought him into quarantine and began the slow work of rebuilding a starving horse with careful feedings, supplements, vitamins, patience, and love. Little by little, the light returned to his eyes. At first, Ben wouldn’t even look at us. Then one day, he did. Then he started walking to the fence. Then he began nickering every time he saw us. That beautiful horse, who had every reason not to trust humans, opened his heart again. Ben and Roman were the best of friends. Ben was Roman’s protector, his comfort, his steady rock through all the chaos they had endured together. Watching them begin to feel safe was one of the greatest honors of our lives. This morning, everything changed. We found Ben down in the pasture with a catastrophic intestinal twist. Our vet said it was one of the worst cases he had ever seen. It was likely to have been hidden intestinal issues. We made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully, surrounded by love.
