A similar phrase is “soft lands breed soft men”, which I first read in Herodotus when I studied ancient history and I’ve come across so many paraphrases since. One being a character in the film “Prince of Persia”, which is a fun film that I enjoyed to watch when I was university as well! I think about these types of phrases often, and they probably have slightly different meanings to different people. Essentially the tough times make us who we are. If life is too simple and too easy, then we would never learn what we would need to and be ready to take on challenges. - @lucytallyn
