as someone that assess people's finances for a living, we are all so poor and we're not spending money on anything other then basic needs.

The response is correct but is in no way limited to Canada. It applies to most Western countries

See that’s one thing I wish people would stop saying. “Wages are keeping up with inflation “ because the fact is wages are apart of inflation.

I also am Canadian and have no debt other than our house. My husband works in mortgage enforcement and there are a lot of successful people who have second recreational homes and interest rates spiked so much, people who were doing okay, lost their homes. Now we do well for our family but living costs and wages are not mathing. We do well on paper it would seem but we still are breaking even and we wonder everyday how someone with a single income and a couple kids are living.

Just before covid, my daughter was able to pay rent, buy groceries, go on trips, and eat out in nice restaurants and still had money left over with $30,000 in her savings account. She had to give up her "luxuries" she has no cable and lived off grid for 2 years in her tiny cabin.

I've owned my 2002 Dodge Ram for the past 12 years. I do all the repairs on it to save money. My 60 inch flat screen TV I bought at Walmart and paid $200 Because I bought the one that was on the shelf that they were using everyday. The Finance Minister of Canada said that for people who get\nA government pension like cops, firemen, school teachers. They get a government pension on top of the federal and provincial pension. The people that are going to retire in the next 20- 25 years, She said that they need 750000 Plus\n In their bank and everyone else who gets just a provincial and federal pension, will nee $1.3 million, either in savings or Equity like your house. In order to be able to retire because she said the average Canadian is living to 87 years old. So if you retire at 65 You\n Will need to be able to afford to pay for everything that you're doing right now for the next 22 years plus or minus. Let that fucking sit in Looks like most Canadians will probably never enjoy retirement. Because they won't be able to afford it because the provincial and federal pension doesn't cover Jack shit.

all your points are well defined in fact, but I do believe there is a spending addiction also going on. not with big items but in the $30 to $50 range. most of which are not needed.

And I'm going to add, that the quality of EVERYTHING has declined drastically. It's all junk, cheaply made. I've lost count of how many things I've purchased that broke with a few months. From heaters to fans to appliances... Im actually looking in thrift stores for good quality items. At least if those break you don't lose a lot of money.

Canada has lost the standard of living enjoyed by our parents. Wages have not kept pace with increased costs in every direction. Where groceries are concerned, I personally think it’s mostly corporate greed. A few large conglomerates controlling the market and using every excuse possible to raise prices.
