A drunk driver crashed into our car that was parked outside our house, carried on driving so pushed it halfway down the road until it smashed into my clinic (thankfully clinic was barely damaged) & it also smashed into another car on its way. She’d already hit someone else’s car moments before round the corner. She had no insurance either so mine went up after that & my car was written off. Fled the scene. Lost her license for 2 years & 8 weeks suspended sentence - not enough IMO. But just a night in jail is wild!

I noticed this from family guy / Simpson’s etc they will always make jokes about drink driving. It’s absolutely not a laughing matter here it’s not something to be joked about.

A lot of the time here people will have one drink, still be under the legal limit, and refuse to drive just to be safe. Hell my mum refuses to have a drink too late if she has to drive the next morning!

We had quite a few years of awareness campaigns over here and it completely changed from drunk driving being slightly frowned upon to it being massively socially unacceptable.

In the UK there is a double whammy, if you don’t declare the offence to your employer and they find out, you will be in trouble for not declaring it. Just tell your employer, you will be fine unless your job is driving

There’s also a big fear here in UK of not drinking too much in evening if driving the following morning as you can still be over the limit the day after. Which is a good thing

As someone in their early 40s in the UK we had some pretty horrific drink driving adverts when we were growing up and I think it instilled the fear of god in 95% of us.

I won't even drive if ive had a single drink that day usually. If it was a small drink and with a meal maybe 1 drink. I also have a car that has all the safety features like automatic braking and lane assistance, corrective steering. My convenience and a drink is not worth someone's life.

do you think that if the public transport situation was better, people wouldn't drink drive so much ? like, do you think it's because everything is so far apart? so wherever you go, you have to drive? or do you generally have good taxi services?

It didn’t even occur to me when I lived in the US that I may still be over the limit to drive the morning after a night out. It wasn’t until I moved here that I even considered the possibility

It’s the drive thru margarita bars in Texas that blew my mind. Sure let’s drive up and order margs to go for the drive…

We don’t differentiate between jail/prison it’s the same thing. I think what you are talking about is what we would call “a night in the cells”. Basically when you get arrested they take you back to the police station and put you in the cells there till you’ve sobered up, usually the next morning. Then you will be interviewed and released or if it’s more serious possibility remanded(kept there) to go straight to court.

the USA didn't have the anti drunk driving ads that we did during the 80s and 90s, clearly

Alcohol is one of the worst things to drive on. It slows you, makes you confident and is legal so puts you at ease

In New York and Colorado the limit is actually .04 anything over that and you are screwed. It’s a ticket from .05-.07 but it holds all the fines suspensions and legal ramifications.

a lot of our states up until a few years ago had this mindset that it was just something that happened. there are still States catching up with how to deal with this and I think Georgia might be one of them but, it's better than it used to be and I think they're still putting things on the table to figure out how to do better with it. you're from the UK you should understand this stuff it's about patience but we're going to get there and I'm hoping when we do, you put out another video to show how better we could come than we used to be on this stuff. just give it time we're going to get better at it I hope we can make you happy with how we address this stuff soon but we need time to figure it out

But how do they deal with the increased insurance rates and legal fees? As an American I was terrified of drinking and driving in the US for that alone.
