I wish you could’ve been there with us, because it’s hard to explain what that time felt like if you didn’t live it. The late 90s and early 2000s gay scene wasn’t perfect, but it was sacred in a way I don’t think we’ll ever get back. We had clubs, dance floors, drag shows, sweat, music, laughter, chosen family, and nights where we felt safe in a world that didn’t always make room for us. We weren’t staring at screens treating people like disposable options. We were out there living, dancing until our shirts were soaked, laughing until we couldn’t breathe, standing outside the club at 3 a.m. with people who felt like home. Those nights were more than parties. They were freedom. They were survival. They were community. And it honestly breaks my heart because I don’t think it will ever be that way again, not in this lifetime. You didn’t just miss a scene. You missed a feeling, and I wish more than anything you could’ve felt it with us

I'm 54. After the AIDS shock of the '80s, the '90s were generally a more joyful time. We went out a lot—the best clubs were around back then. I danced my heart out with my friends every week. There was no social media, but there were dates and fun in real life. The world felt smaller, and yet everything seemed possible.

It was about dance, music, community and friends. Weekends clubbing all night, and crazy chill out parties. No apps, just smiles, nods and conversations.

it was more simple. I'm 45. some of the best dance music came out late 90s early 2000s. we didn't have smart phones. so none of these crappy apps. it felt more free to me. definitely less toxic. ppl actually talked you and not their heads in their phones. my experience everyone just dance everyone and had a good time. you meet them later make friends sometimes not. I miss it.

1995-2005 was somewhere between indie queer cinema and TV (Will and Grace, Queer as Folk, and Noah's Arc) and THE CLUB. It was an era right before we became "a mainstream conversation."

im 52 and the 90s were AMAZING!! The bars and clubs were packed with incredible djs playing music that had you dancing until 4am...and the vibe was so loving and inclusive. Everyone was dressed in whatever made them comfortable and there was always an afterhours party that went on until noon. You never knew exactly what the night would hold but, yiu knew you were going to meet interesting pll who werent constantly looking at their phones. There were actual conversations and ppl really would listen. So much more authentic

It felt like people went out to genuinely have fun and enjoy the music back then. The 90s and early 2000s had a different vibe. People were dancing, laughing, socializing, and just living in the moment. It wasn’t about showing off or trying to outdo everyone else. Sure, there were occasional problems, but it seems like there was a lot less drama and fighting than there is now. Maybe it’s because I’m 43 years old and got to experience that era firsthand, but some of my best memories come from those days. The music, the atmosphere, and the way people connected just felt more authentic. People actually danced because they loved the music, not because they were trying to get attention. Sometimes I catch myself wishing I could go back and relive a few of those nights because going out back then was an experience, not just something to post on social media. Those were definitely some good times.

I think that back then everything was more about love. And I don't give up. Strive for true love. Unconditional love is everything.

We met in bars, the dance floor or at a friend’s party. We had large friend groups and were very social. It was community.
