As a paramedic with 27 years of experience we use IV Benadryl and epinephrine for all anaphylactic allergic reactions.

Wait but the sleepy part is WHY I use it! Cuz it makes me drowsy without HORRIBLE restless legs like OTC sleep meds or Gravol do 😭 Is it at least a *sometimes* kind of drug? Like, taking it once or twice a week is okay but for sure not every day? 😥😥😥

Hi! It may be useful to clarify the drug rather than the brand name. Benadryl, as the brand name, has products that are cetirizine as well as products that are diphenhydramine. It can confuse people who don’t have a medical background as most medications in the United States are sold under the brand name.

But yet nobody can tell me a pill I can take that can stop or prevent me from having an anaphylactic allergy. I currently take three antihistamines and can still have an anaphylactic reaction. I take one Benadryl and it stops it.
