@drpaulmaloof: Most people think a hammertoe is just a crooked toe. Not even close. Over time, these deformities can become so severe that shoes hurt, walking hurts, and the toe can actually stop serving a useful purpose altogether. So why does it happen? Muscle imbalances, genetics, arthritis, nerve conditions, trauma, and years of abnormal pressure can gradually pull the toe into a bent position. What starts as a flexible deformity can eventually become rigid and permanently stuck. The good news? There are options. Depending on the severity, treatment can range from shoe modifications and padding to tendon releases, joint procedures, or reconstruction. But sometimes the deformity is so advanced that the simplest solution is also the most effective. In this case, the patient chose toe amputation. That may sound extreme, but when a severely deformed toe is painful, nonfunctional, and causing daily problems, removing it can provide excellent relief and get patients back into comfortable shoes and back to living their lives. Would you ever consider removing a toe if it meant getting rid of the pain for good? 👇 #hammertoe #toedeformities #amputation #FootSurgery #doctor
