About 50,000 years ago, a nickel-iron asteroid roughly 150 feet across slammed into what is now northern Arizona at tremendous speed. The impact blasted out a crater nearly three-quarters of a mile wide and more than 500 feet deep, releasing energy greater than many nuclear weapons. The explosion pulverized rock, hurled debris for miles, and transformed the landscape in seconds. What makes Barringer so remarkable is that it is geologically young. Unlike most impact craters, erosion hasn’t erased its shape, allowing visitors to stand on the rim and see the scars of a cosmic collision almost exactly as nature left them. But Barringer was a local disaster. The Chicxulub impact in Mexico 66 million years ago was something entirely different. That asteroid was several miles wide and created a crater about 110 miles across. The resulting global catastrophe helped drive the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs and reshaped life on Earth.
