Rather long video if you have the time. Several people had asked me about the latest study from the nurses health cohort. Several influencers had posted that this study demonstrates that higher protein is better for you. There are many caveats that are reviewed in the details of the article. Nobody in the cohort was eating the high protein amounts recommended by many in social media, and remember, if some is good, that does not mean more is better. The highest protein consumers only averaged 89 g a day. Basicaly, the group eating the lowest protein was actually eating a fairly unhealthy diet. When they did fairly complex statistical analysis plant protein was clearly associated with beneficial aging. Total protein was only slightly beneficial after several statistical controls. Animal protein was either negatively associated or slightly positive depending on what you were looking at. Interestingly, the source, for most of the plant protein was actually bread. And looking over the diets in the supplement to the article, certainly no one in any of these groups was Whole Foods plant-based and eating what I would consider a particularly healthy diet. That being said what I take away from this article is that plant protein is certainly associated with healthy aging. Animal protein in some of the models was negatively associated with health and with further adjustment was either negligible or slightly positive, mainly with maintenance of physical activity. The TLDR: eat your plants! #this #tranding #tik_tok #videoviral
