Ellen Moor was murdered on June 1, 1996. A little over a month prior, Ellen told police that her boyfriend, Fredrick Evans, had beaten, raped, and choked her. Ellen had been assaulted with a beer bottle, punched, kicked, strangled, and hit with a cord. Her hair had been cut off as well. Evans was arrested based on Ellen's statement and physical evidence, and jailed because he could not post the $100,000 cash bail. Nine days later on May 1, 1996, when the case went before a judge, Ellen stated that she didn't want to pursue it further. All charges against Evans, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, rape, and terroristic threats, were dropped and he was released. About 6:25am on June 1, 1996, a police officer responding to a phone call went to the home that Ellen shared with Evans. There, he discovered Ellen's body with multiple stab wounds. Evans, who was also there, told the officer that he had killed her. Evans was arrested and held without bail. In an interview, Vernoca Michael, executive director of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, stated that violence usually escalates once the abuse becomes public. Michael went on to state that abused women, who often come from families in which abuse has taken place for years, do not always recognize the danger and take action. Ellen's funeral was held on June 6, 1996. She was dressed in a pink gown, with a miniature Bible between her folded hands. Her 18-year-old son Ray leaned over the powder blue casket and pleaded,

Ellen had returned from a visit to Georgia four days before she was killed. About a week before her death, another woman said she saw Ellen walking with blood dripping from her head. Ellen told the woman she'd had a seizure. Fredrick Evans is not listed in Pennsylvania's inmate or parolee system, nor was any information released about the outcome of his murder charge.
