@craigdabler: How to Season a Crucible: Sand casting requires something to heat the metal in so if using a torch you will most likely need a crucible. Most people will use Borax which is perfectly fine but I’m going to show you how to use white paste flux instead. This is much easier for those of you needing to do this yourself and although it does produce toxic fumes with proper ventilation and a good respirator along with eye protection and any other protection you prefer it is very straightforward and effective. You want a paste consistency that can be applied with a brush. Try not to get brush hairs in the thin layer or they turn black and burn. With enough heat they will disappear but easier to pick them out first. Coat the inside, the edges and the pour area. Then heat from the bottom first. This is the most important step and once nice and hot then start heating the edges and finally the inside. Once the flux turns to goo then tip the crucible to get it to coat the entire surface. You may need to stop, let it cool, recoat the bald areas and go through the same steps again. * All of our kits include a pre seasoned crucible and we have several sizes available if you don’t want to do it yourself. Good luck! ***************************** #diycastings #sandcasting #jewelrymaking #jewelrycasting #jewelrytips
Hi! I use borax, is that still good for the crucible?

Hi Craig, love your content, what's the particularly toxic part of this? My teacher was more than a bit lacking on some chemical safety instruction and we seasoned with borax in a poorly ventilated studio. Now I'm trying to catch safety things I missed learning

Very educational, but how is it fun without the customary small 2nd degree burn?
