@eric_wyld: They built muscular bodies to look alive while the government looked away. But, the body could lie. So the community made something that couldn’t. Honest signals need to be hard to fake in order to stay honest. When it became clear that HIV/AIDS didn’t produce an honest or visible signal, the LGBT+ community responded with action. Many of those who fought AIDS and developed safe practices and ultimately saved millions of lives themselves fell victim to the virus. #evolution #scicomm #AIDScrisis
this is so fascinating and I've NEVER thought about this connection!

woah, this is so interesting. completely makes sense but not something i’d ever have put together on my own. i love learning about facets of queer history i’m less familiar with because they’re not as firsthand to me as a lesbian.

They're doing it now with the ongoing pandemic. The government has looked away and so being "fit" is how you prove you're healthy.

So the other thing that my friends and I noticed living in LA during the AIDS crisis is that larger boys (chubby) got more action from men for the same reason that buff boys did, if you were fit or fat you were considered healthy it was sad but a true period in history.

Thank you for including PWUD. I work in harm reduction and it’s often forgot the part the iv use community played in combatting HIV.

Love the history lessons here because the common outlook on the AIDS crisis seems to be that gay men were passive & helpless— a more easily consumable image —but gay men actively stepped up to help each other. It's a fuller image of a community of people standing up for one another.

wow this makes so much sense and it makes me want to do research adjacent to this. Was the buff agenda specific only to the US context or did this trickle down to other countries? maybe similar countries where the government didn't acknowledge the LGBT and the aids crisis?
