This is missing the point. Where you had 10 engineers, now it’s 8-9. Next year it’ll be 7. In a few years it’ll be 5. All the while compensation will be going down, people will be getting randomly laid off and finding a job will be a nightmare

It misunderstands what software development is to claim AI will replace developers.

You are forgetting that Fable is the worst model you will have used in the future. I have reached about 4x of my pre AI productivity, but that also means that now we need 4 less developers in the team.

Software development is NOT programming. Writing code is one of the lesser challenges. Aside from that LLMs — even the best models with the best prompts — are still garbage at truly complex and precise work. Garbage.

To be honest. I still have the feeling that the code quality is not as good or at least not better than gpt5.5xhigh in direct comparison. It feels again like a lot of hype

i believe that great sw engineers will increase their reach. just even bringing stuff to production is still something else.

No matter how far it will get it still needs engineers to know what you ask for and to check the result. Why I think we are cooked is the question of how you learn to check things properly.

I was laid off 4 months ago, due to AI. Do you have a job for me?

Everything you said is completely true for 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8, with little nuances. I’d be more curious to hear where it surprised you compared to those 😅

Agree. I’m managing a large system single handedly, processing loads of customer data. I’ve separated my core security and data/persistence layers from the rest of my system. They get heavily vetted, every line. But my iOS apps, the work horses, are 100% ai developed. I don’t read a single line of code. The velocity is insane.

You can see Webflow, Meta… and all companies making layoffs of 10 thousands… So collectively, yes, AI is leaving unemployed thousands.

It does mistakes ALL the time. And it’s only getting worse. Models are getting now trained on AI generated code, not humans anymore.
