At these locations, bicycle tires can get caught in the rail gap, causing the rider to lose control and crash. To cross safely, bicyclists may need to move farther into the lane before crossing the tracks. One thing many drivers don’t realize is that bicyclists usually aren’t moving into the lane to slow traffic down. In many locations, the shoulder is too narrow, uneven, or covered in gravel to safely cross the tracks. Sometimes the safest option is to use more of the roadway.
