When my son started school several decades ago in a geologically active area - all parents had to donate a certain amount of emergency supplies to the school. And we were all given a list of items we should keep stocked at home. The medical facility that I worked at has back up generators. It's just common sense.

I survived Hugo on St.Croix. I had just arrived there with my 2 month old, a week before it hit. I now live in Florida (since 1997) and have always been in prep mode, but ramped up the efforts in the past 1.5 years. Considering the political climate we find ourselves in these days, being prepared for any and everything is just the sensible thing to do. It took going through that one disaster completely unprepared, to open my eyes to how vulnerable we are on a daily basis; not only by way of natural disaster, but also by the decisions made by human beings who don’t give a care for how those decisions affect others.
