Despite the fact that oil extraction, refining, and processing have caused significant environmental damage, we cannot underestimate the immense benefits and progress that petroleum brought to humanity. The development of durable polymers revolutionized the chemical industry. For the first time, humanity gained access to materials that resist decay and environmental degradation, making it possible to create disposable medical products, reliable computer components, and countless technologies that define modern life. Oil also provided fuel for some of the first large-scale power plants at a time when solar energy was barely understood and nuclear power remained far beyond the technological horizon. Cities were transformed by automobiles, and many urban areas gradually moved away from burning coal directly, reducing smoke and improving living conditions for millions of people. Yet oil is not infinite. Even if we set environmental concerns aside, humanity cannot rely on liquid fossil fuels forever. Every energy source has its era. Therefore, it is worth thanking the chemists, engineers, geologists, and oil workers who helped build the technological world of the 20th century. But just as oil replaced coal as the dominant energy source, our generation must develop and adopt technologies that preserve its advantages while eliminating its shortcomings.
